A beautifully dramatic sculpture suspended from soaring ceilings, Hiraeth is bold and impactful. Translating to “a longing for a time or place that may have never existed,” mixed-media artist Chelsea Gilmore delves into the depths of this bittersweet feeling. Using salvaged lace and 1960s army parachutes chosen to reference from her father’s time as a soldier and her own grandmother’s collection, the piece uniquely blends delicacy and strength. “I take the unassuming and create the unexpected to spark moments of curiosity and discovery, challenging the boundaries of the familiar, the natural, and the dream-like,” she explains. Weaving together history and emotion, this site-specific installation meets viewers at eye level, inviting them to pause and reflect.
